Dr. Nicolas Christou
Dr. Christou obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University in 1971 and his Doctor of Medicine in 1975. He completed his surgical training at McGill in 1980 and was appointed Assistant Professor of Surgery at McGill University, and Attending Staff Surgeon Royal Victoria Hospital in 1981. He rose through the academic ranks at McGill and became Professor of Surgery in 1991. He is a member of many prestigious societies including the American Surgical Association, The Canadian Association of General Surgeons, The American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Bariatric Surgery. He is also a member of the College of Critical Care Medicine and up to 2002 was directly responsible for the care of critically ill patients 8-12 weeks per year in the Intensive Care Unit of the MUHC. This provided him with the experience needed to treat the infectious complications that occasionally develop after weight loss surgery in some high-risk patients.
Dr. Christou's research efforts over the last 20 years focused on surgical infections and the host response to infections. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from McGill in Surgical Host Defense Mechanisms. More recently, Dr. Christou's research interests are expanding in the field of Clinical Outcomes after Bariatric Surgery, especially Laparoscopic RY Gastric Bypass and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding. He currently performs all weight-loss surgery procedures by the laparoscopic approach.
Dr. Christou is the past president of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.
