The First Visit to the Surgeon's Office

Prior to your visit your bariatric surgeon will review the detailed information you provided in the Case History Form along with all pertinent documents such as previous operation reports, if any.

During your visit with the bariatric surgeon you will have an accurate weight and height measurement (to verify your current BMI) and the appropriate medical examination. The surgeon will make the final determination if you are a suitable candidate for bariatric surgery. The surgeon will then explain the different surgical procedures and the risks and benefits of each. This is your chance to ask questions and to fully understand what is involved.

Based on your BMI, your obesity related comorbid disease, your age, sex and province of residence and the option you have chosen the following will occur:

  • If you have chosen the Centre Metropolitain de Chirurgie private hospital option you will be given an operating date. You will be given 2 weeks to give your certified check deposit to "lock-in" your surgery date. Once you "lock-in" your surgery date, it is yours and no one can touch it. You will not be canceled due to lack of beds, an emergency liver transplant etc.
  • If you can only have your surgery at the McGill University Health Cente you will be moved from the "Office Consultation" to the "Ready for Surgery" list. We hope that the maximum wait period will not be more then 2 years from the date of your office visit, but we cannot guarantee this date as we are not in control of the available resources- operating room time and hospital bed availability.
