Preparing for Surgery

Weight loss surgery is complex surgery. The best preparation is to understand the risks and potential benefits and to closely follow our instructions.

To mentally prepare yourself:

  • Understand the surgical process and what to expect afterwords.
  • Talk to people who have had weight loss surgery.
  • Start a journal about your experience. Record how you feel now, the obstacles you encounter, the things you hope to be able to do after surgery.
  • Get a letter of support from your family. It helps to know you have people behind you, waiting to help.

To physically prepare yourself, strictly follow these guidelines:

  • MAKE SURE YOU FOLLOW YOUR OPTIFAST VCLD DIET FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE SURGERY.
  • Stop smoking for at least a month before surgery.
  • Be certain to follow our instructions regarding any medications you may be taking to control other health conditions.
  • Arrive on time, with supplies from home for a 2-day hospital stay. If you use special equipment for sleep apnea, you should bring your machine to the hospital.

Make Arrangements Ahead of Time

During the weeks before the surgery, you need to take time to organize for your stay in the hospital. Plan to be in hospital for about 2 days. You will need to find someone to take over your responsibilities while you are in the hospital and after you go home to recover from the surgery (for example, taking care of the children, managing your business, etc.). You should also make plans for someone to bring you to and from the hospital.
