Great news for Ontario Patients

OHIP and Weight Loss Surgery enter into formal agreement to provide laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery to Ontario patients.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care on Ontario and Weight Loss Surgery Inc. have entered into a formal agreement by which Ontario patients can undergo laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery in Montreal funded by the Ontario public health care system. This publicly funded privately delivered health care model will not impact on the availability of weight loss surgery for Quebec patients. Quebec patients suffering from the ravages of morbid obesity anxiously await an anticipated announcement from the Quebec Minister of Health Dr. Yves Bolduc on a province wide plan for the management of obesity including morbid obesity.
Ontario has anouned plans to increase access to gastric bypass surgery. "High levels of obesity are leading to dramatic rises in serious chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and some cancers," said David Caplan, minister of Health and Long-Term Care. In 2009 the province estimates it will fund 1,660 patients for out-of-province/country bariatric surgery. This will be done in 11 US centers and at our center in Montreal. The surgery will be carried out at the Centre Metropolitain de Chirurgie Plastique a fully accredited private hospital that specializes in gender reassignment operations, orthopedic surgery and bariatric surgery. We not only provide a Canadian solution to the needs of Ontario patients, we also do this at a very competitive cost compared to the US centers.
